Is this the German equivalent of an unpaid intern? US actually has people who make 0 while working full time or just under full time ‘for experience’ and depending on the college program it might be required. I know that PharmD students are forced to work for free for hospitals and companies, even for-profit companies like CVS which make billions, and they not only don’t get paid, they have to Pay for the opportunity to do it and they won’t get their degree if they don’t.

Look up Foodsharing in your area, OP. You have to pass a test to become part of the community, it is very regulated, but once you’re in you have the opportunity to pick up produce from bakeries, restaurants, even supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown out. I survived off Foodsharing during my student days as a newly immigrated student in Germany
